What is the California Prop 65 Warning?

California Prop 65 (California's Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986) requires businesses to provide warnings to consumers if their products contain chemicals that are known to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.

Labeling Requirements for California Prop 65

If your products contain chemicals listed under Prop 65, they must have a clear and reasonable warning to inform consumers. What is Acrylamide?

Acrylamide is a chemical that forms naturally in plant-based foods when cooked at high temperatures, such as frying, roasting, or baking. It is commonly found in products like baked goods, roasted nuts, and certain snack foods. While acrylamide is naturally present, high-temperature cooking can cause an increase in its concentration.

What is Proposition 65?

Proposition 65 was enacted by California in 1986 to protect consumers by informing them about their potential exposure to chemicals that may cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Over 900 chemicals are currently on the Prop 65 list, including acrylamide.

Where is Acrylamide Found?

Acrylamide is commonly found in roasted and baked foods like cookies, bread crusts, potato chips, and other snack foods. It is also present in some beverages like coffee.

How Does This Affect My Health?

Acrylamide is listed under Prop 65 due to its potential health risks, such as cancer and reproductive harm. However, the levels found in food are generally low. The FDA encourages healthy eating and does not recommend stopping the consumption of food containing acrylamide, as long as it is part of a balanced diet. In large amounts, acrylamide can have negative effects, but typical exposure levels are not expected to cause harm.

Why Am I Seeing This Warning?

The Prop 65 warning is required by California law due to the presence of acrylamide in our products, even though the chemical occurs naturally. To comply with Prop 65 requirements, we include this warning on all products sold in California.
